"Smiling is a social duty ."

Stephane Grell - french archeologist & historian

We are privileged people to be able to travel anywhere we want.
We have a huge responsability to the people we are visiting.

Tourism is a beautifull way to meet people if it stays on a exchange level :
exchange of our knowledge with economy, social, culture and ecology
will be advantageous for everybody.

If we are just taking advantage of the situation and giving nothing back,
our value on human-being scale will be very poor.

All the magic of travelling is meeting people with a different history,
culture and langage and we realize we are all the same in front of our desires and dreams.

CLINIC : the clinic has been finished in december 2004

Hello, Friends and Supporters of Gili Meno Medical Clinic,

We promised to keep you all informed of our progress, and here is our report to date.

The land agreement has been drawn and signed by all parties concerned, including the fundraising committee, and has been sent to the land Registry in Mataram for change of ownership into the name of the 'People of Gili Meno - Health'.

We have approached the local Health Board, and are hopeful they will supply the nurse and pay the salary as soon as we are in a position to require her.

We have a contract agreed with Daan, from Holland, to pay our doctor's salary for the first two years.

Attached is a financial statement, giving details of our total bank balance, and where the money came from. In future reports we hope to be able to scan in the actual bank book details for your perusal.

In addition to the current balance, we have been promised:

Graham Davies (Owner of Malias Child Rest. and Bungalows here),
in addition to his personal donation of 1,000,000 Rp.,is hoping
to secure 5,000 Aus $ through Fremantle City Rotary Club.

Percy Burlace,(Owner of the Bird Park and accommodation here),
is raising money in Bali
through his various business outlets.
He is offering one week free accommodation to anyone who contributes 1,000,000 Rp. or more.
He already has 10,000,000 Rp. He has also found some medical supplies and equipment,
and has found an electrician who will supply and fit all electricity in the clinic.
Percy is also approaching a Rotary Club in Bali on our behalf.

Simon Liddiard, owner of Blue Marlin Dive Centre, has also promised his support.

George and Michelle Gardiner, New Zealand, are lodging 500 NZ $, to our account.

1,230 Euro due from Ireland. Will be in next week. Details will appear on your next financial statement.

A friend in Ireland is running a pub quiz on Oct. 16 th . Proceeds for the Clinic Committee

Other friends from Ireland are running a Halloween 'Fancy Dress Night'. Proceeds for the Clinic.

Xavier, of Tao Kombo, is sourcing funds in France. His sister arrives here in a few weeks,
and she hopes to bring their monies with her.

Juliet White, a photographer, who already gave us a donation,
is hoping to raise more funds by selling photos of the island.

A new English newspaper about to be launched, called 'Out and About Lombok and the Gilies',
has promised us a half page article.

Many other visitors who were here this Summer, have gone home
determined to do something to help.

So we have been busy. Even though there is only 5 million odd rupiah in the bank,
so much more has been committed. The good-will the committee receive is huge.
Everyone we talk to wants to help in some way.

Including you, obviously. Thank you very much for your help and support.
Without you this wonderful thing could not happen.

Will be in touch again shortly with a further update.

HELP US BUILD THE GILI MENO CLINIC

THIS IS A PLEA

We hope that you will listen to these few words with love and concern. We hope that you will help, even in a small way, to finance a modest, free-of-charge clinic on Gili Meno (Meno Island), which lies off the Northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia.

This is a situationbrought by necessity for the intrinsic islanders of this very beautiful small island. The population of 569 recently increased to 570. Without proper medical treatment the baby died on the day after his birth. The reason?

Who knows? Unfortunately, children are often the victims of delay and lack of proper medical knowledge. Their parents suffer the loss forever.

We need modern medicine for everyone on this island. The essentials of proper medical treatment is not available to the people of Gili Meno without travelling by boat (sampan), horse cart (cidomo), and bus, to the Public Hospital on the mainland. There is no Government allowance for the expenses of medical treatment, medicines or cost of transport.

The islanders are basically and historically fishermen from Sulawesi, but for the last few years some have been able to make a living by working in tourist venues here. Sadly now, with the world situation, their meagre incomes have dropped right down; meanwhile the cost of living has gone right up, thus worsening their plight.

These folk are remarkably stalwart, remarkably resolute and resilient, with a great sense of humour, but who can bear the lack of decent medical care, and the thought of loved ones dying, without reason.

The proposed clinic is to be a non-profit organisation planned to cope with a wide range of problems from coral infections to childbirth, from near-drowning to the common cold, from severe tropical fevers to ingrown toe nails - in other words a wide scope of human ills.

Yes, in this year 2003, we want and need modern medicine for everyone on Gili Meno. So often proper medical knowledge and correct diagnosis is not available. Delays and wrong diagnoses can prove dangerous or even fatal. If we have an efficient clinic here Gili Meno people will have their right to live. The need for a small clinic boat for emergencies is a necessity.

The simple, but well equipped clinic will be built on land donated by the family of early island settlers, the building labour contributed by local people. It will incorporate living quarters for an experienced nurse/midwife, and a non-resident doctor who will visit regularly.

We all know that there is neediness all over the world but to those of us who truly love this tiny jewel of an island and its people, the Meno Clinic is a very special cause which can be helped by YOU.
